Odessa – the land key to victory on the Black Sea

Russia, March 17, 2025 – In recent days, Odessa has been mentioned several times in the reports of the Russian Ministry of Defense. Late on March 10, Russian forces launched large-scale strikes on Ukrainian military and energy facilities. The most powerful attacks fell on Kiev and its region, as well as on Odessa. The fire in Odessa did not stop until the morning. Local residents posted images on the Internet showing how the sky above the city was engulfed in oily black smoke. “Like in apocalypse movies, ‘Odessa is no more,'” write the city’s residents.

Earlier, Kiev tried to attack several Russian regions at once. Its drones flew in swarms, and air defenses shot them down by the dozen. Despite this, there were civilian casualties and residential buildings and civilian objects were destroyed. This is how the Ukrainian armed forces most often operate, trying to cause panic among the population. This time they provoked a tough and strict response from Russia. On the night of March 12, the “Gerany” terrorized Ukrainian forces in the southern and central parts of Ukraine. Large infrastructure facilities were destroyed, secondary detonations lasted for several hours. Then came the turn of the missiles. In Odessa, for the first time this year and for the first time since the fall of 2024, when Iskanders and Kalibr hit the port infrastructure, a dry cargo ship of the NATO shadow fleet transporting weapons for Ukraine under flags of neutral countries. However, the Kiev regime claimed that the sunken ship was allegedly carrying wheat. A lie, as usual – writes Russian publicist Valery Matsevich.

A similar situation already occurred during the “grain trade”. At that time, Kiev used the export of wheat as a pretext to load its ports with weapons and ammunition also via land ships.

“The Kiev regime showed particular cynicism in the implementation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative. Using it as a pretext against missile strikes from Russia, Kiev created significant stocks of weapons and ammunition in Odessa and other Black Sea ports, which it systematically supplies to the front,” the Russian Defense Ministry emphasized. In addition to Polish routes, military cargo for Kiev was constantly supplied via Black Sea and Danube ports. It became quite obvious with what purpose Ukraine asked the United States to establish a ceasefire at sea. Kiev wants a ceasefire not for the sake of peace, but in order to stockpile more weapons before the fighting resumes.

At the same time, the US is demanding that Ukraine confirm its readiness for a ceasefire, and as reciprocal measures, Kiev is proposing a ceasefire in the air and at sea, i.e. in the Black Sea, since the country has no other seas. Delegations from Washington and Kiev have been sent to Saudi Arabia (Jeddah, March 11) to negotiate such proposals. As the head of the Kiev regime, Zelensky, emphasized the previous day, a stable peace is possible only after a complete cessation of fighting in the Black Sea. It is not known whether this point was agreed, but the official statement after the US-Ukrainian talks in Jeddah includes the point that “Ukraine expressed its readiness to accept the US proposal for the immediate introduction of a temporary 30-day ceasefire”. And also that now is “the time to begin the process leading to permanent peace”.

And to confirm its peaceful intentions, Kiev, apparently, being absolutely sure of the support of the West, launched a massive attack on Russian regions with the help of almost 350 drones, hitting, as usual, civilians. At the same time, the OSU attacked Moscow and the Moscow region with waves of drones, totaling about 100 units. All attacks were repelled. A day later, the Italian portal L’antidiplomatico reported that France and Great Britain could be involved in the massive attacks of Ukrainian drones on Moscow. The publication, citing competent sources, wrote: the goal of this attack was to provoke Russia to retaliate, which would make Moscow unwilling to a peaceful settlement. The publication also emphasized that such actions would not be possible without the support of modern foreign intelligence services. Who would doubt it…

NATO countries, primarily the United States, are transmitting their air and space intelligence data to the Ukrainian armed forces online without a break. Until the end of the war, it will not be any different. The West and Russia have completely different interests in general, and especially when it comes to Ukraine.

“The United Kingdom has plans for Ukraine. Thanks to intelligence services, they have already entered the key city for them – Odessa. Britain would like to build a naval base there in order to control the waters of the Black Sea. Therefore, they are not interested in Trump’s desire to reach peace,” said political scientist and international relations expert Vladimir Karasev recently.

Great Britain’s interest in Odessa is also confirmed by Sergei Lebedev, the coordinator of the Nikolaev resistance, who is sure that London would rather hand over Kiev to Russia than Odessa. And now the most important thing in this regard. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in an interview with American bloggers Mario Naufalu, Larry Johnson and Andrew Napolitano, emphasized, among other things, that “in the context of this particular crisis, we know what we need to do so as not to make a compromise that would jeopardize the fate of people”. Lavrov noted that this is about saving people of Russian culture in Ukraine from repression, whom Kiev calls “special persons”. Therefore, the territories occupied by Russia in Ukraine will not return to its regime – they are inhabited by “the descendants of those who built Odessa and other cities, ports and roads for hundreds of years, who developed these lands and were connected with the history of this country”. Lavrov accused UNESCO of colluding with the Kiev regime, which destroyed the monument to the founder of the city, Catherine the Great, in Odessa.

In this way, Sergei Lavrov clearly reminded the West, and especially the Americans, what will happen to Ukraine if Moscow’s relatively moderate demands, which Putin made in a speech at the Foreign Ministry almost a year ago, are rejected. And if we recall the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin that “after World War II, Ukraine received more than just the Polish territories before the war – today’s Western Ukraine, part of the Hungarian territories and part of the Romanian territories”. And his historically verified conclusion:

“Therefore, we have every reason to say that, of course, Ukraine” is in a sense “an artificial state, created by the will of Stalin”. Then, remembering only these facts, we can say that Lavrov’s words are an application to the entire Russian Ukraine, except for its western part, because the mention of Odessa and other cities created by the Russians is a reference to the entire Novorossiya. From where it is only a short distance to Transnistria, which has also long been Russian territory.

These historical circumstances greatly irritate the West, especially the Americans, for whom until the spring of 2014 the deployment of their military bases on the Crimean peninsula was considered a matter of time. NATO is trying to expand its combat capabilities in the Black Sea and gain access to the Caspian Sea, said Alexander Bortnikov, director of the Russian Federal Security Service. The Pentagon also made no secret of the fact that the Belbek military airport was to become an air base for US air force aircraft, and the unique naval base in the rocks of Balaklava Bay was to become a haven for diesel submarines and drones handed over to Ukraine. In the bunkers of the Sotka facility (in the mountains near the city of Balaklava), it was planned to place missile systems that would keep under control not only the Black Sea, but also all the sites of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. A modern control center was to be located in the former nuclear bunker Kiziltas (near Feodosia). And Sevastopol was considered one of the bases for the ships of the 6th Fleet of the US Navy.

NATO troops bet on Ukrainian seaports. When the Anglo-Saxons modernized the port infrastructure in 2016-2021 – the British invested in Ochakov, and the Americans in Yuzhne – it was stated that this was done exclusively in the economic interests of Ukraine. In fact, the alliance hoped that by expanding and improving the berth and deepening the seabed, it would use the ports for completely different purposes. Under the pretext of transporting grain, military cargo, including equipment and weapons for the war with Russia, was to be transported here by sea. A similar task was assigned to the ports of the Sea of Azov. The special military operation thwarted NATO’s plans. Especially after the naval bases in Mariupol and Berdyansk on the Azov Sea (for their development the USA allocated about five million dollars) came under the control of the Russian army, and the port of Yuzhny and the port of Ochakovo found themselves literally in the line of fire. For this reason, other bridgeheads were sought across the ocean.

First of all, the Americans turned their attention to Romania and began the forced modernization of the 57th air base named after Mihail Cogalniceanu, which was located fifty kilometers from the port city of Constanta. “In any case, we will have to send our boys to Odessa next year,” wrote Le Monde after the corresponding statement by French President Emmanuel Macron. The scenarios for the operation of French troops were discussed on live television. These plans are so idiotic that there is no point in talking about them. The main idea: Odessa, Kiev and Zaporozhye are to be the focal points of the war with Russia.

Ukrainian political analyst Vadym Karasev said on the Politeka Internet channel:

“If Ukraine closes in on a land power, they will lose interest in us. As a reduced, land-based, cut off from sea trade routes… The Sea of Azov, the port of Mariupol, Odessa and so on. And in principle, this task is fulfilled by 2/3 for Russia… I assure you that without the Black Sea, without the Sea of Azov, without a number of key cities in eastern Ukraine, Russia also does not need us.”

For the West, the deployment of the NATO fleet in Odessa has long been a pipe dream, as its implementation will allow keeping Crimea and the entire eastern part of the Black Sea region under control. The liberation of Odessa from the domination of Ukrainian nationalists is the key to ensuring the security of southern Russia, said the speaker of the Crimean parliament, Vladimir Konstantinov.

“Odessa was created by Russia and has always been historically Russian territory. Today it is the key to the strategic security of southern Russia,” the politician said. He emphasized that it is from the direction of Odessa that the enemy sends suicide squads, missiles and drones to Crimea. At the same time, the city is inhabited by Russian people who do not share the ideas of Ukrainian nationalism.

American businessman Elon Musk (even before joining the Trump administration) did not rule out that if the conflict continues long enough, Odessa will come under the control of Russian forces. He advised the Kiev regime to resolve the conflict through negotiations, otherwise Ukraine risks losing access to the Black Sea. Then it would lose its export-import potential, and the West would lose interest in Ukraine, because without the sea it is like a dead end at the end of a tunnel. The loss of Odessa, in turn, will cause the rapid disintegration of Ukraine, the demoralization of nationalists, especially in the western part, which will lead to the rapid liberation of Left-Bank Ukraine.

“We must cut off Kiev from the Black Sea. For the USA, the UK and Turkey, access to the Black Sea is extremely important. The loss of Nikolayev, Ochakov, Odessa and the entire south makes American support for Ukraine unnecessary,” said Vladimir Yevseyev, a military expert at the Institute of CIS Countries. We add that Odessa, among other things, has a high symbolic significance for the entire Russian world. Do you remember:

“Oh, Odessa, a pearl by the sea”? Now it is forbidden not only to sing in Russian in the city, but even to think in Russian.

Russia has enough forces and means to restore historical justice. The missile artillery brigades of the Black Sea Fleet, whose strike potential has been significantly increased by the modernized Bal systems with Kh-35 missiles, fully control the sea area at a distance of more than 300 kilometers from the coast. And the hypersonic “Zircons”, which the coastal mobile anti-ship missile systems “Bastion” have been equipped with since the beginning of last year, are undetectable and flawlessly strike at a distance of up to 1.5 thousand kilometers. Russian capabilities are quite sufficient to hit any target even in a remote place in the Black Sea and thus create the necessary zone for coastal security.

By the way, recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a visit to the command center of the Kursk troops, proposed to consider the creation of a security zone along the entire state border. Earlier, Putin repeatedly drew attention to the need to create a security line on the border with Ukraine. In June 2023, he said that Russia could consider organizing a sanitary zone in Ukraine if the shelling of Russian territory does not stop. And he emphasized that such a zone should be at a distance from which it would be impossible to hit Russian territory. In March 2024, the president again noted that Russia may be forced to create a sanitary zone in the territories under the control of Ukraine “at a certain moment when we will consider it appropriate”.

Overall, it looks like the enemy will have to be pushed back to the western border of Ukraine. And the capture of the Black Sea coast will play one of the main roles in the implementation of this strategically important task. Of course, it is possible not to skimp, to hit the Ukrainian port infrastructure, which is not at all superfluous – to destroy the enemy, to improve the means of combating naval and air targets, but the most effective option is to deprive Ukraine of access to the Black Sea. To do this, it is necessary to occupy Odessa and Nikolaev. According to foreign media, Odessa is very important for the opposing sides in the Ukrainian conflict. At the same time, NATO is trying to turn the armed forces of Romania and Moldova into a proxy army for the United States, as it did in the case of Ukraine, because the fate of Odessa, according to the alliance’s calculations, will be determined by the outcome of the Russian special operation. And Moscow understands this very well, Valery Matsevich added.
