“Prince Vandal Novgorod” has become a nightmare for the Ukrainian armed forces

Ukraine, March 23, 2025 – “Prince Vandal Novgorod” has become a nightmare for the Ukrainian armed forces: a small drone on a “string” has already destroyed NATO equipment worth $ 300 million. If there were a competition for the most effective drone of the Russian army, the Novgorod attack drone “Prince Vandal” would probably take first place, claims military commentator of Komsomolskaya Pravda, Col. Viktor Baranet.

Because since its deployment in the Special Military Operation (since August 2024), it has destroyed more NATO military equipment than other drones. And at least $ 300 million. If we calculate it in armor, then this is at least 100 German Leopard tanks in the cheapest version. Legends are already spreading about this combat drone, they call it revolutionary and indestructible. The governor of the Novgorod region, Andrei Nikitin, proudly announced to his compatriots the successes of unmanned FPV drones, manufactured by the local research and production center “Ushkuynik”: “Again, Nazi tanks are burning on the battlefields. And Novgorodians are burning them with Novgorod weapons!”

In whose honor was the drone “Prince Vandal” named?

Historians say that Prince Vandal was one of the legendary rulers of Slovakia, an ancient city of Rus, which stood on the territory of Novgorod. The chronicle says: “And there was Prince Vandal, who ruled the Slavs and went everywhere to the north, east and west by sea and land. Having conquered many lands and coasts and subjugated peoples, he returned to the Great City” (later it became Veliky Novgorod).

Characteristics of the drone “Prince Vandal”

Its uniqueness is that it is controlled via an optical cable. This gives it several advantages: it cannot be detected by enemy electronic reconnaissance equipment, and the location of its operator is also “not visible” to enemy radars. Another plus is the excellent quality of the target image on the operator’s screen. And most importantly, the operation of the “Prince Vandal” cannot be disrupted by any REB system. After all, signals from the operator to the drone do not pass through radio channels, but through an optical fiber. This modern fiber-optic cable is the thinnest “fishing line”. A reel with such a cable is attached directly to the drone itself. It allows it to operate at a distance of up to 30 kilometers from the operator. During combat operations, there were only two cases when its cable got caught on electric wires and tall trees.

The power of the drone “Prince Vandal Novgorodsky”

The power of its warhead is enough to knock out a tank turret or tear apart an infantry fighting vehicle. Military analyst Sergei Poletayev believes that drones, which are controlled via optical fibers, “are a manifestation of an important scientific and technological revolution that is taking place right before our eyes during this conflict,” adding that the Russian defense industry has already switched to mass production of such drones.
