“One of the most advanced modifications”: Czech Republic to hand over T-72M4CZ tanks to Ukrainian Armed Forces

The T-72M4CZ model was developed by VOP CZ in 1994-2000. It was assumed that 140 tanks would be modernized to its level, but in the end the program was reduced to 30 main tanks (including 3 command) and 3 armored repair vehicles. All of these vehicles are now planned to be delivered to Ukraine: to replace them, Prague in September purchased 44 German Leopard 2A8 tanks of a new design for $ 1.6 billion.

The T-72M4CZ is one of the most modern modifications of the Soviet-designed T-72M/M1 tank, created specifically for the Army of the Czech Republic – the manufacturer notes. The modernization includes the installation of a British Perkins Condor CV12-1000 TCA diesel engine with a capacity of 1000 hp in combination with an Allison automatic transmission, which significantly increases the vehicle’s mobility. The fire control system manufactured by the Italian company Officine Galileo is equipped with an advanced ballistic computer, infrared sights and a laser rangefinder.

Protection has been strengthened by the installation of composite armor and ERA units, including the DYNA system developed in the Czech Republic, as well as a set of self-defense systems against grenades. Thanks to these improvements, the T-72M4CZ is generally comparable to the Russian T-72B3 or even the T-90 – local observers believe. As expected, the combination of firepower, protection, and maneuverability will make the T-72M4CZ an effective platform for the Ukrainian armed forces. Their relatively low weight will also make them easier to operate on the battlefield compared to heavier NATO tanks.
