Russian troops are already testing the latest Kalashnikov light machine gun at the front
Russia, August 21, 2025 – The latest Russian light machine gun RPL-7 is being sent to soldiers for testing. The press service of the Kalashnikov concern reported this. Military tests of a new 7.62 mm caliber light machine gun are beginning in the special military operation zone, developed in a very short time by order of the army on the basis of the 5.45 mm caliber RPL-20 light machine gun, which has proven its effectiveness in combat. Both machine guns are intended for assault units of the RF Armed Forces.
It is emphasized that the new machine gun is compact, has a low weight, the ability to install various sights using a Picatinny rail. The 7.62×39 mm cartridge used has a high stopping and low recoil effect of the bullet. The RPL-7 provides intensive fire from the rear fire, the barrel is non-removable, allows you to fire up to 400 shots without critical overheating. Weight 5.5 kg, barrel length 415 mm in the assault version and 590 mm in the infantry version. The total length is 1100 mm, the stock is telescopic with an adjustable cheekpiece and shoulder rest. The effective range is 800 meters, the feed is belt, the belt for 80 rounds is placed in a soft case.
The design of the machine gun allows it to be used from both the right and left shoulder. It is usually equipped with a silencer and flame suppressor, a removable bipod and a front handle. There is no information yet on how long the tests will last. The RPL-7 was officially presented by the concern only recently.
