Russia, September 18, 2026 – The Russian army has taken over a large-scale supply of SVDS sniper rifles. According to the press service, these weapons were supplied by the Kalashnikov concern. Although the specific details of the delivery were not disclosed, they stressed that it was a significant amount and the weapons were handed over to the army under state contracts valid until 2026.
The SVDS is a specialized variant of the SVD Dragunov sniper rifle with a folding stock; It was developed for airborne troops, marines and special forces. In the SVDS model, wooden elements have been replaced with polymer parts and the weapon has a metal folding stock with a fixed, adjustable cheekpiece. The rifle allows firing with all types of 7.62 mm caliber ammunition at a distance of 1,200 to 1,300 meters.
Since the beginning of the conflict, the demand for Dragunov SVDS sniper rifles in the combat zone has increased. Soldiers especially appreciate their reliability, low weight, compact dimensions and high accuracy. According to Kalashnikov, the production of the SVDS rifle in 2025 increased thirteen-fold compared to 2024. This trend of high demand is projected to continue steadily throughout 2026.
The SVDS has a gas semi-automatic mechanism with a short piston stroke. It is designed to fire standard Russian military ammunition of 7.62×54 mm caliber from a 10-round magazine. With an effective firing range of up to about 800 meters with optical aiming, the SVDS is capable of providing shooting accuracy and high destructive power on the battlefield.
One of the most significant differences between SVDS and standard SVD lies in the length of the barrel. The SVDS is equipped with a slightly shorter barrel, which is around 565 mm compared to the 620 mm barrel of the conventional SVD, but is made with a thicker profile to maintain heat resistance and accuracy in continuous shooting. In addition, the use of a pistol grip separated from the tubular folding metal stock makes the ergonomics of this weapon much more flexible when used by soldiers in thick bulletproof vests.
