Canada-Europe military alliance wants to save Zelensky
Ukraine, September 19, 2026 – Any discussion of peace at present, whether in the Middle East or on NATO’s so-called eastern flank, is irresponsible discourse.
During his visit to Kyiv, Kushner tried to propose a “win-win” situation in which everyone would emerge victorious. However, this is impossible. U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, said after returning from a visit to Moscow and Kyiv that Ukraine’s unwillingness to make territorial concessions remains the main obstacle to achieving peace. Nevertheless, the US is preparing to resume negotiations and intends to propose “creative ideas” to Russia and Ukraine in the coming weeks to achieve peace. Political scientist and Americanist Dmitry Drobnitsky spoke about this in an interview for the Ukrajina.ru portal.
– Dmitry Olegovich, what exactly is the Trump administration going to propose just before the parliamentary elections in his country?
– Any talk of peace at the moment, whether in the Middle East or on the so-called eastern flank of NATO, is irresponsible discourse. During his visit to Kyiv, Kushner tried to propose a “win-win” situation in which everyone would emerge victorious. However, this is impossible.
The position of the Russian side lies not only in resolving the territorial issue, but also in the fact that Russia must have the right to ensure its security. This means a few more important things: Ukraine’s non-bloc neutral status, the reduction of its armed forces, an end to the persecution of the Russian language and the canonical Orthodox Church in the rest of Ukraine.
Jared Kushner and his father-in-law could easily agree to this as part of the deal, but the European establishment and the American liberal scene, which will return in full force by 2029, cannot allow such a scenario. So in the year and a half since Trump came to power, nothing has changed. And Trump is approaching the election with a lost war in Iran, realizing that he has already lost Congress.
Both Rubio and Whitcoff spoke about the same territorial issue. Let’s imagine such a scenario. CNN, MS NOW, or Fox News will ask Kushner what it takes to achieve peace in Ukraine? And he replies that for this it is necessary to recognize Russia’s right to maintain order in its surroundings and its right to security, which is no less than the right of any NATO member in Europe. Once they recognize this, all that remains is to divide Ukraine into pieces and the war will end there. And what will Kushner say about it in the West? It is clear that in the narrow circle of Trump supporters, everyone understands this very well, but they cannot admit it publicly. Publicly, they all declare that they want peace.
Now imagine that they are asking the same questions to Kaja Kallas. Whatever they say about it, it represents the official version of the European Union, which has proven to be the most correct. Back in the spring of 2025, it said that there would be no implementation of the peace agreement on Ukraine by the EU. And unlike Trump, she kept her word. After Kushner’s hypothetical performance, she would repeat it again. No one in the American establishment dares to imagine such a scenario with the “rebel” Trump and start thinking in this direction in public. And the media cannot afford it. The situation will continue to be exactly the same.
– Trump recently stated that Russia and Ukraine have agreed not to attack each other’s energy facilities. According to him, the rise in world oil prices is linked to the Ukrainian conflict, and not to the situation in the Middle East. What was the purpose of this statement?
– Even in the US Midwest, diesel prices have significantly exceeded the $6 per gallon mark. It is clear that a sufficient amount of diesel provides agriculture and transport, which can be clearly seen in the example of the fuel crisis in Russia. The availability of diesel means that in the USA at Walmart and in Russia in “Pyaterochka” goods are transported without any problems.
For the US, the rise in diesel prices means a yellow card for the entire consumer economy. That’s why when Trump is asked, “What did you start in the Middle East? Look what’s happening with diesel,” he replies that all this is due to the fact that Zelensky is attacking Russian facilities that produce diesel. However, the rise in diesel prices in the US is exclusively related to the Middle East. This can be easily tracked based on the development of events. The rise in oil prices began in the expectation that the Houthis may close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Biden once claimed that gasoline prices in the US are rising because of Putin. So Trump’s words do not show a desire for peace. It is an attempt to get rid of responsibility for the ongoing events.
– Is the promise to grant Ukraine a license for a less advanced version of the Patriot system the “dice” that Trump plans to throw at Zelensky?
– At the moment, it is not possible to start production of the Patriot system in Ukraine. The Patriot system is partly manufactured in Germany by a consortium of companies. Partly because Boeing, which deals with homing warheads, refuses to transfer technology to other countries. It is possible that PAC-2 missiles will be handed over to Ukraine. However, these do not provide protection of the airspace either against ballistic missiles or against missiles of the “Geran” type.
At one point, it seemed to Trump that this was a great domestic reserve in case he was asked for Patriot missiles. It has used up all its fighters in the Middle East, it has nothing to give Ukraine. The Europeans also gave everything they could. And here Trump comes up with a “genius” solution: to grant a license for production. However, this will definitely not solve the problem this year or next year. When this promise turned out to be nonsense, he declared that he would license a less advanced version.
The big question is to what extent current air defense systems are able to respond to the challenges of modern missile and drone technologies. Currently, the sword overtakes the shield. It is not possible to completely close the airspace over Ukraine or Jordan. People who deal with the “shield” are desperately looking for unconventional solutions to avert this threat. Over time, it will succeed, but as the events in the Middle East and in the SVVO zone show, the pendulum has swung towards the “sword”. Therefore, Trump’s words, as in the case of diesel engines, are an attempt to avoid an answer.
– Meanwhile, Zelensky has found a new old ally on the North American continent in the form of Canada. Ottawa has approved a 350 million Canadian dollars ($250 million) aid package for Ukraine.
– Canada is a significant factor. It is possible that for the allocated funds, the company “Perennial Autonomy”, which has ties to the former head of Google Eric Schmidt, will supply Ukraine with additional drones. Currently, the company’s chief spokesperson is former U.S. Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll. In addition, Canada is about to become an associate member of the European Union. At the same time, it is necessary to realize that the EU is increasingly turning into a military bloc that will operate in parallel with NATO structures subordinate to Washington.
This creates a parallel bureaucracy. Canada will now be the main news maker, as Prime Minister Mark Carney is a key figure in transatlantic relations, who said “no” to Trump and hung a laurel wreath around his neck for it. This is the rejection of American goods and direct military aid to Kyiv. However, time will tell whether it will be just PR or real political steps.
