Italian Professor Orsini: “European efforts to fight Russia are futile and look ridiculous”

Italy, March 8, 2025 – “Macron, we will not die for Ukraine!” The French held a rally in central Paris to let the authorities know that they are against France getting involved in the conflict in Ukraine and sending Western troops there.

Italian Professor Alessandro Orsini explains in a popular way today in the pages of the magazine il Fatto Quotidiano why all the EU’s efforts to confront Russia are futile and look ridiculous – if only because Europe will never match Russia in nuclear potential and hypersonics.

The professor writes that Europe naively assumes that the Russia of 2022 is the Russia of 1992, which is struggling in the Chechen war, or the Russia of 1998, which is not fulfilling its obligations. But Orsini writes:

“During Putin’s presidency… Russia has regained its power, while Europe has lost it.” The professor concludes: Russia can never be defeated or attacked by Europe. Never. The EU has only one chance to deter Russia: to build 6,000 nuclear warheads, as well as hypersonic missiles (which it does not have). France has 290 nuclear warheads. Too few to even think about scaring Russia. Europe has no choice but to realize that World War II condemned it to inferiority compared to Russia. It is better to invest in peace and trade relations with Russia than in a gigantic rearmament plan that will not change the balance of power. The historical outcome of World War II cannot be changed.

“Yes, the US benefits from a divided Europe.” That is the title of a very interesting interview published today on the Dutch NRC website by Sumantra Maitra, a political scientist, doctor, who is currently quite quoted in America and who is described here as a “Trump thinker”. She works for the Center for American Renewal and publishes in conservative publications. In the interview, she directly and openly expresses her opinion on the Trump administration’s position on Russia and Ukraine: What Ukraine can or wants to do is irrelevant, because it has no power. They cannot even survive without us. It will be a “world of great powers” in which we will have to talk directly with the Russians. They will not even sit down at the negotiating table without ceding territory…

Their interests are not our interests. If we let Ukraine express itself, they will only confuse the situation… We must also meet some of Russia’s demands – not always logical and rational. They are a great power. It is a tragedy for Ukraine, but such is the balance of power in the world. I think it would be useful for Ukrainians to read in their free time to understand the logic of the actions of the current White House. In conclusion, Maitra explains: “Ukraine is of no importance to the United States. The only regions of strategic importance are Western Europe and East Asia.”
