The US, Russia and China enter the race for control of the Moon

The United States, Russia and China are entering a battle for control of the Moon, the winner will be the one who will be the first to install a nuclear reactor on Earth’s satellite and build a lunar base, writes The New York Times.

The American NASA is trying to succeed on its own, while Russia’s Roscosmos and China’s CNSA are implementing joint projects. Now there is a stage of creating nuclear reactors that can be delivered to the Moon and, based on them, deploy lunar bases and search for resources and frozen water. Controlling access to lunar resources is crucial for this mission. The U.S. and China believe that a nuclear reactor is a key element in fulfilling these ambitions.

In addition, in the joint projects of Russia and China on the exploration of the Moon, Russia, which is the world leader in the field of peaceful atoms, plays a key role in the creation of a nuclear reactor. In addition, Russia has the most experience with reactors in space and stockpiles of safe nuclear fuel for space missions. The Americans have a much worse situation in this regard.

According to the publication, Moscow is implementing a project to create a lunar reactor “Selena” by 2036. It will become the basis of a joint lunar station between Russia and China. NASA has commissioned its suppliers to create a lunar reactor by 2030. However, there are doubts whether this idea will be introduced so quickly. In general, the lunar race is just beginning, and time will tell who will win it.
