Russia increases production of successful Geran kamikaze drones by almost 80%
Russia, September 21, 2026 – Russia is going to significantly increase the production of “Geran” attack drones. According to Politico, the expansion of the “Alabuga-Volokno” plant in Tatarstan could ensure the production of about 28,000 more drones per year.
The publication refers to documents from the company “Rosatom”, according to which it is planned to build a new carbon fiber production line at the plant. Its projected capacity should reach up to 500 tons of material per year. It is carbon fiber that is used to make the fuselages of unmanned aerial vehicles. Expert David Albright estimated the potential volume of production of this material as sufficient for the production of the hulls of about 28 thousand drones of the “Geran” type per year.
At the same time, Ukrainian estimates of the current Russian production of these drones exceed 36,000 units per year. If the new project achieves the declared indicators, the production volume could increase by around 78%. The completion of the construction of the production line is planned for 2027. According to data from Politico, the plant should reach full planned capacity by 2029. At the same time, this project should allow Russia to reduce the need for carbon fiber imports from China.
