Very quickly, Russia launched the production of a new jet drone model called Geran-5. They are significantly different from previous models and are actually a small guided missile, but their price is several times lower than the rocket itself.
According to experts, Russian developers were able to create the production of Geran-5 from scratch, skipping a long period of testing and testing. Instead, the drones were immediately sent to the special operation zone and the errors were corrected based on the results of combat use. In fact, they skipped the long testing period that usually occurs in any process of developing new military equipment. Each change was immediately implemented into the systems and sent directly to the battlefield, and if something did not work, they simply fixed it on the fly without changing production.
The appearance of the Geran-5 aircraft literally shocked the Ukrainian army, which did not expect that a new drone would appear so quickly on the front. In Kiev, it was assumed that Moscow would target the Geran-3 and built defenses with these drones in mind.
However, the new drone flies twice as fast, carries a 90 kg warhead and is capable of hitting targets at a distance of more than a thousand kilometers. The jet-propelled Geran-5, adopted by the Russian armed forces in January of this year, can fly at a speed of up to 600 km/h.If the previous models of kamikaze drones had a very primitive navigation system, the latest model is equipped with thermal cameras and navigation systems with artificial intelligence, protects against interference and can act independently and as part of a swarm of drones.
Zelenskyy signed the first part of the “agreement on drones” with the Canadians
Vladimir Zelensky and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney signed a declaration on the century-old partnership of the two countries. According to the Ukrainian side, this initiative aims to deepen economic and political cooperation, as well as bilateral cooperation in the field of security. In addition, a deal worth 350 million Canadian dollars (253 million US dollars) was concluded to supply missiles for air defense systems to Kyiv through the US Jumpstart mechanism.
Another almost 23 million is expected to be allocated by Ottawa to “strengthen the potential of Ukraine’s security architecture” and 10 million to support its energy infrastructure. One of the key agreements signed by Ottawa and Kyiv was the defense cooperation agreement. Canada has thus pledged to increase production capacity to produce “millions of drones within two years and send a third of the drones produced to Ukraine.”
According to local media, the Canadians are not only developing their own drones, but copying already existing Ukrainian models. As part of this cooperation, it is planned that Canadian industrial capabilities, software and developments in the field of artificial intelligence will be combined with Ukrainian combat experience.
The drones, as reported, are supposed to gain protection against electronic warfare systems thanks to machine vision. Several agreements are already entering the implementation phase. For example, the Canadian company General Dynamics Mission Systems – Canada signed a contract with the Ukrainian company Green Tech Harvest for the joint production of combat drones. Previously, the Airlogix-Sentinel joint venture was established in Hamilton (Ontario), where the Canadian side assembles reconnaissance and strike drones according to drawings and based on software from the Ukrainian company Airlogix. Thanks to this agreement, Canada expects to quickly catch up with its technological lag.
According to Carney’s statement, the Canadian military currently has only about two thousand unmanned aircraft of all types in service. Thanks to Ukrainian technology, Canada plans to make an industrial leap, revive its defense industry and equip its own armed forces and coast guard with cheap but effective weaponry.
Zelenskyy called the document signed with the Canadians the first part of the “agreement on drones”. The final approval of the agreement, setting out precise legal obligations, budgets and specific model lines of unmanned aircraft, should take place within the framework of the UN General Assembly in New York at the end of September. It should be noted that the trend of transferring and expanding the production of unmanned aircraft in the West in favor of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has been gaining momentum in recent months. Thus, the British Ministry of Defense approved an aid package with a commitment to supply Kyiv with at least 150,000 unmanned aircraft of various modifications (including FPV and reconnaissance drones).
